The 10th District

An important part of being a good legislator is being present and active in the district.

Along with my constituent coffees held throughout the district, as soon as I took office in 2017, I organized three important groups that I continue to lead: the Energy Stakeholders Group, the 10th District Multicultural Coalition and the HOA Leaders Forum. Read more about all of these below.

Community Outreach

The Energy Stakeholders Group - After taking over as Chair of the Senate Environmental and Energy Committee in 2020, Sen. Hansen formed a coalition of diverse stakeholders, all of whom had a major interest in driving Delaware’s energy policy. This group is made up of representatives from all four of Delaware’s electric generation/transmission/distribution companies, governmental agencies, environmental groups, businesses, and voices across the spectrum in energy policy. All meetings are virtual and open to the public. The group meets approximately twice a month to discuss energy issues, delve into policy questions, and develop legislation. This group has become the premier group for vetting and developing Delaware’s energy legislation and has led to the successful passage of legislation developing community solar in Delaware and Delaware’s net metering policy.

Multicultural Coalition – The 10th District is very large and home to many diverse communities. In order to foster greater understanding and harmony within our larger community, the Multicultural Coalition was formed and meets often, generally with speakers. Along with holding the first Multicultural Festival in Middletown, we have:

  • Focused on hate crimes education and reporting with a presentation by the Middletown Town Police Chief;

    • Discussed immigration issues with an immigration attorney;

  • Met with members of our Muslim community at a local mosque to learn about Ramadan and the experience of being a Muslim today;

    • Met with recent immigrants from African countries to discuss their experiences in Delaware;

  • Met twice with the State Office of Management and Budget to discuss procurement and how to become registered on the State’s list of vendors.

  • Met with the State Division of Human Relations to discuss discrimination in state employment, how to report it and what to expect.

Senator Hansen is a proud sponsor of the bill that created the Delaware African and Caribbean Affairs Commission.

 HOA Leaders Forum – As a former homeowner association President and President of an umbrella group of homeowner associations for many years (the Bear/Glasgow Council of Civic Organizations), I know the difficult and under-appreciated job that our HOA leaders face in handling the day-to-day work of running an HOA. In order to help with resources, training, and problem-solving, I began the HOA Leaders Forum. We often bring in experts to discuss issues such as stormwater management, deed restriction enforcement, collection of back assessments, neighborhood communication, road repaving, and many other issues. If you are a member of your HOA board or an officer, or just an interested resident, please feel free to join us.
