Veterans and Our Military

The sacrifices made by our veterans and our military families to protect us and preserve our way of life must be honored and never forgotten. I am the proud daughter of a former Army and Air Force service member, as well as the proud mother of an Army Captain, and I understand what is on the line when a family member receives the call to active duty. When our veterans and active duty servicemen and women return home, we have a moral obligation to assist them and their families with whatever services they require.

A few of the bills that I have sponsored and which are now law include:

  • School tax credit for disabled veterans (Co-sponsor of HB 214, 151 st GA) - This Act creates the Disabled Veterans Property Tax Relief and Education Fund. Pursuant to this legislation, school districts are authorized to create a credit against school taxes for up to the full amount of school tax liability for property owned by a veteran with a 100% disability rating who is domiciled in this state.

  • Focusing on the mental health needs of our veterans (Co-sponsor of SCR 78; 149th GA) In order to focus on the behavioral and mental health needs of the veteran population in Delaware this resolution creates a Veterans Sub-committee of the State’s Behavioral Health Consortium.

  • In-state tuition for military spouses and children (Co-sponsor of SB 125; 151st GA) This bill provides that the spouse and any child of a member of the active military service of the United States, who has been assigned to duty elsewhere immediately following assignment to duty in Delaware, shall be deemed to be an in-state resident for the purposes of determining the tuition, fees, and other charges at Delaware public universities, colleges, or community colleges as long as the spouse or child remains enrolled at such institution.

  • Providing licensure portability to assist military spouses (Co-sponsor of SB 246; 151st GA) In order to assist military spouses with the issue of professional license portability, with this bill, Delaware would join the Interstate Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact (OT Compact). The OT Compact is an interstate compact, or a formal agreement among states, to facilitate the interstate practice of occupational therapy. Under the OT Compact, Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs) who are licensed and in good standing in a Compact member state may practice in other Compact member states via a “compact privilege,” which is equivalent to a license.
