Taking care of our public safety personnel that take care of us is important. I am happy and proud

to have been a co-sponsor on a number of bills which will mean a better quality of life for our first

responders and other public safety personnel.

A few of the bills that I have sponsored and which are now law include:

  • Increased the tax credit for active members of the volunteer fire, ambulance, and rescue companies from $500 to $1,000. (Co-sponsor of SB 189; 151st GA)

  • Increased disability benefits for police officers, fire fighters and those first responders who suffer injuries on the job by removing the requirement to deduct earnings over their base pay at the time of injury from their disability pension. (Co-sponsor of HB 308; 151st GA)

  • Increased benefits for emergency medical technicians (Co-sponsor of HB 312; 149 th GA) This Act includes “emergency medical technicians” within the definition of employee under the County/Municipal Police/Firefighter Pension Plan.

  • Tuition reimbursement program for volunteer firefighters (Co-sponsor of HB 249; 151 st GA) Pursuant to this bill, active volunteer firefighters may be reimbursed for tuition for 2 undergraduate level courses or one masters level course per semester at any Delaware college or university. The State Fire Prevention Commission is charged with promulgating rules and regulations and administering the program.

  • Increased pension benefits for correction officers and other peace officers (Co-sponsor of HB 80 w/HA 1; 151 st GA) This bill provides increased pension benefits for correction officers; probation and parole officers employed by the Department of Correction; Capitol Police officers; Department of Natural Resources police officers; University of Delaware Police; State Fire Marshal officers; Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement agents; Justice of the Peace Court constables; probation and parole officers in the Serious Juvenile Offender Unit; and senior probation officers employed by the Division of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families; State Police Drug Diversion Unit agents who are not Delaware State Police Troopers; and Delaware State University police officers.

Middletown police officers take an active roll in community events and being a positive influence in our neighborhoods.
